In connection with the International Day of Women in Mathematics on May 12th, the Mathematical Institute is opening the exhibition "Remember Maryam Mirzakhani" in honor of the very first female mathematician to be awarded the Fields Medal. The medal is awarded to mathematicians under the age of 40 who have distinguished themselves with outstanding research. Maryam received the prize for her significant contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.
Maryam Mirzakhani tragically died of cancer at the age of just 40. Since 2018, May 12th, Maryam's birthday, has been celebrated worldwide as an occasion to promote women in mathematics and recognize their significant contributions to mathematical knowledge.
The event at the Math Department will take place onÌýMay 16.
